Ichijodani Asakura Clan Historic Ruins

The Ichijodani Asakura Clan Historic Ruins is located at east of Fukui City along the Ashiba River, and is designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan. The four gardens found at the site have also been designated as National Special Places of scenic beauty.

This is where the Asakura clan, lords of Echizen Province, built Ichijodani Castle in the Middle Ages, and it served as their base for more than 100 years. A castle town was built at the foot of the castle, and the almost complete remains of samurai residences, temples, and town houses from that period have been excavated. In particular, after the Onin War, many court nobles and Buddhist monks from Kyoto fled to Ichijodani, and at the same time, Kyoto-style culture was brought to Ichijodani and flourished there.

In 1573, the Ichijodani area was burnt down from Oda Nobunaga’s attack, and the Asakura clan was also destroyed. Part of the excavated castle town has been restored and is now maintained as a restored townscape.
